Sixteen Des Moines public schools were designated as schools "Energy Star" and participate in the joint program of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy to reduce energy consumption. District schools are qualified Brubaker, Capitol View, Carver, Cattell, Greenwood, Hanawalt, Howe, Morris, Oak Park, Perkins, Pleasant Hill, South Union, Stowe, and Windsor Elementary and Goodrell Wright Middle School.Each building is consistent with energy performance standards set by the EPA to use less energy, less expensive to operate and less emissions of greenhouse gas emissions than its peers. Schools also must score in the top 25 per cent on the basis of EPA's national system of performance rating to qualify. "Although these designations initial energy Star provide official recognition of our efforts, our district is engaged in energy strategies in all schools," said Bill Good, Director of Operations of Des Moines Public Schools.
